Donna asks…

Yahoo! Groups?

What Yahoo! Groups are worldwide, Free for all to use, and have a Mission of keeping items from the landfills?
Tip: they are a netwok of people working towards the same goal and provide a main source in recycling of usuable items.

And for more stars, if you were to join this group how would you be willing to help save our Earth by participating in the efforts mentioned above?

Hint: I own one of these groups and am active in “Green”, and recycling efforts.

Tim answers:

Freecycle (TM) is a worldwide movement of people whose mission is to keep usable items out of the landfills. Freecycle is “changing the world one gift at a time”.

There are local groups all over the world where people offer items for free and others request them via email. Members can also post wanted for items.

Go to www.freecycle.org and look for a group near you.

Some groups allow posting pets.

Everything on Freecycle must be free, legal and have no strings attached.

Richard asks…

Yahoo!groups?

How many Yahoo!groups have you joined?

Tim answers:

Currently I am in 17, but that number has been much higher in the past. I’m trying to cut back.

Chris asks…

How do I block Yahoo Groups invitations from coming into my inbox?

I get yahoo groups invitations to porn sights every day. I want to block them but as they are from yahoo groups you can’t even mark them as spam. I’m at a loss. Yahoo doesn’t answer the phones or answer E-mails so I feel stuck.

Tim answers:

If you did not ask for these mailings, then treat them as the spam that they are. Yes, Joseph, you CAN mark them as spam. You can also block the address that they come from. If you can’t spam them, then try this: sign out of Yahoo. Then delete your temporary Internet files, history and cookies, some computers need to reboot. Once done, go back into Yahoo and see if that has helped. Now, you can not completely stop all spam, but you can help to put a big dent in it.
First, try not to open any of them, that only makes them send more and more to you.
Check mark them and click on ‘Spam,’ this should stop those addresses from being delivered to your inbox.
Use your spam guard and block address.
Look for the ‘Options’ link at upper right corner of mail screen and click on it
Options /mail options
Click on ‘spam’ in the list on the left.
Make sure spam guard is on, by checking in the little box.
Then in ‘Blocked Email Addresses,’ enter the E-mail address you wish blocked, in the box after ‘Add a blocked address’ and click on the ‘add’ button, then click on save changes at top left of screen.
You will never get mail from that address again.
This should help you to control your spam.
Other tips:
Never open E-mail unless you are absolutely sure who it is from.
Never give out your personal information to anyone.
If you are on a site and you absolutely have to sign up for something, check the entire page to make sure you uncheck any lines wanting to send you any other info, notices, catalogs, ads, and the like.
Added detail:
Yes, spammers change one item in their addresses a lot, so you might try blocking the entire domain, by putting in
*@ thedomainyouwanttoblock.com
for instance: *@seeyou.com
Or, if they change the domain, instead of the company name you can block the name by putting in Imatheft_inc@*
Hope this helps.

Susan asks…

Why does yahoo groups send me invites to groups I have not requested to join?

Yahoo Groups email saying I requested to join a group which I did not, and it appears to be group chat porn. Anyone else get these emails? How can I tell Yahoo when there is no question relating to this subject?

Tim answers:

How can I prevent moderators from adding me to their groups or sending me invitations?

William asks…

Why would Yahoo Groups keep sending me spam to their adult porn groups? Is this a new practice?

I’ve gotten about 12 of these in the past week, always a different group all the same subject PORN !
How can I get them ( or you if your reading Yahoo) to stop? I thought about marking it as spam but there are other groups I do subscribe to. And being that the sender is marked as Yahoo Groups I’m afraid I will miss out on something I want.

Tim answers:

Yahoo isn’t the one who directly sends these, it’s group owners that do. If you don’t want to mark the prevention manner, then all you can do is either ignore them, or report them since it is a TOS violation to send group invites to people you don’t know. I also don’t do the prevention, and when I get these invites I report them, include the mail header. Yahoo will delete these groups.

Ruth asks…

Emails to Yahoo groups deletes web links and attachments. How do I prevent such things from being deleted?

I occasionally need to forward e-mails that contain links to web pages to a yahoo groups e-mail. However, when the e-mail goes out all links and images get deleted by yahoo. Help!

Tim answers:

Depends on if you’re the owner or member. Some groups the owner disables HTML by not allowing attachments. You’d have to speak to the owner of the group

Joseph asks…

How can you have your yahoo group featured on the best of yahoo groups?

I have this great group that I believe should be featured in The Best Of Yahoo Groups.

Thank you for any help.

Tim answers:

Yahoo! Groups is continuously finding ways to optimize directory listings to help people find content they are looking for, sometimes, they adjust the ways in which they compile their directory listings. At any time, the order in which your group appears in Yahoo! Groups directory listings may vary.

However, if you’re interested in growing your membership base, you should list your group in the Yahoo! Groups directory. It’s the only way for new members to find your group. Public group listings can either have open membership or restricted membership — the choice is yours.

If you don’t want the general public to find your group or request memberships, then choose Not Listed in your group settings.

Here’s how:

1. From the list on the left, click Management. This link only appears if you’re the owner of the group or a moderator with the appropriate privileges.
2. Under “Group Settings” in the upper right, click “Description & Appearance”.
3. Click Edit next to “Description”.
4. Choose “Listed” or “Not Listed” next to “Listing Type”.
5. Click Save Changes.
